honoring the men the new friends Bingo time beauty

Buenos Aires, YWAM, “cartoneros” and kids

After a month resting and visiting family/friends in the states, it was time for me to head back to South America to meet up with my team. The time went by so fast… a month felt like a week but at the same time I feel like I have been away from my team for too long! The plan was to meet them in Argentina but like one of my team member’s said, “Finding our team is like chasing the wind.” Haha, how right he was. I got all packed up and ready for my two long days of travel by myself. My Facebook status summed it up pretty well: “after getting up at 3 am on tuesday morning.. 5 flights.. about 20 hours in layovers… barely any sleep.. a very heavy backpack full of gifts:).. one missed flight.. lots of tears then delirious laughter.. a shocking $160 entry fee.. I have finally arrived in Argentina at 2 am.. may not see my team for another three weeks.. oh Jesus, this life I live.. all is well.” Yes… haha turns out they were at the very very bottom of South America. I was excited to talk to some of them on skype and hear all about their journey to Ushuaia… “the end of the world”… literally. After weighing a couple of options I decided to stay at a YWAM base here in Buenos Aires and wait for them.

A flood of spanish filled my ears again when I got to the base. I have got to learn more spanish! The team here is great. Normally they would have students going through a training program called “DTS” or have outreach teams here but at the moment, it’s just the staff which means I got a room all to myself! Praise the Lord… I love alone time. After chilling out by myself for a couple days and getting caught up on some stuff, I wanted to get out and explore. I got to go to a huge beautiful park where they had vendors selling tons of things and live music being played. I also got to go to a local church where a girl opened up the night by sharing on “Blessed are the poor in Spirit…” totally a Heidi Baker thing ha.. it was kind of like God was winking at me. Then the main speaker talked about food multiplying and all this fun God stuff. I got to speak with him afterwards and possibly made a connection for our team when they get here.

I was really excited that this base does lots of outreach/evangelism activities. Today I got to go with some of the team to a really rough area in the city. We were partnering with a church there and serving the “cartoneros.” Now let me explain.. the “cartoneros”.. literally translated as “the cardboard people” are an unofficial group that sift through other people’s garbage in search of recyclable materials to package and sell to recycling businesses. Apparently there was a huge economic crisis in Argentina in 2001 and the “cartoneros” are a visible reminder of the poverty that effected whole communities.

On our way over to the area, I saw many of these people walking along the streets pulling their big heavy carts full of materials they had found. These people have to be so strong to carry around these big carts! Even though these people technically are at the very bottom of society, they are really helping out their community. Because of this, the church wanted to honor them and give their work dignity.

One man that was working with the church is kind of like the cartoneros boss in that area. He was so friendly and has a huge heart for the men. You could tell they loved him by all their joking around together. He gathered them all in the church for a political/work/Jesus meeting. As the men piled in through the front door and took turns meeting us in the culturally latin way (“Hola” with a kiss on the cheek) I couldn’t help but notice the piercings, tattoos, and the look of a hard long life on the streets under all the smiles. I wanted to weep and scream “Jesus thinks you are so amazing!!!” all at the same time. Gosh, these are His favorites. This is my favorite. I knew it was going to be a great afternoon.

The “service” started with a political kind of deal…. honoring them for their services. What a cool idea huh?! Then they talked about work details for a bit. Soon, the YWAM team came out and did a skit about identity. One guy played the role of a regular guy and while the others had characters such a his mother and sister. The “mother” came out screaming that he was worthless and a terrible son and the “sister” said similar. It ended with Jesus coming out and telling him who he really was. I thought the skit was something that anyone could relate to. We all have people tell us lies about who we really are. Who knows what these guys have had said to them… the truth is though, that they are princes in God’s kingdom, even if they don’t know it yet. After that we served them lunch and then ate with them. I tried so hard to say what little I could in spanish! It was fun.

The boss guy said that it went so well. He said, “All these guys have grown up on the streets.. drugs.. alcohol.. the list goes on. All they know is evil.” You could see in his eyes that he had so much much hope for them. It made me want to drop everything and just live in a neighborhood like this. It’s times like that I know what I want to do in life.. simply love people like this.

That night we also went to another rough area and did an after school type program with some kids that live in the slums. They were adorable. We ended up playing Bingo to help them learn english numbers and laughed a lot.

     My heart is full.

Update from Tanya: Chile.. to the end of the world..
We were in yet another bus station, in the middle of nowhere. We needed to figure out what our next steps would be to get “to the end of the world”. As we broke up into groups to get all the information available for travel (by bus, air or boat), I realized that we were not being blown by the winds of the Holy Spirit at this point… we were being blown by the wind of our finances and what “looks” right. With the information we got, we all got together and prayed to see where God would have us go. ALL of us felt to go to Punta Arenas by bus. We quickly bought our tickets and were off in less than an hour for a 6 hour bus ride. The last bus we took was a 12 hour overnight drive. Needless to say, by the time we arrived in Punta Arenas, we were all exhausted and ready for bed. On the bus I was thinking, “I don’t know why You want us to go here, it’s not exactly on the way”, but it’s really nice to know that whatever we are doing, we are in the center of God’s will for us. I don’t have to know all the answers, all I have to do is be obedient.

We are starting to get the hang of entering a new city, the moment we get in we find a place to all hang out while a small group goes out to find the best place for all of us to stay. One of our family members, Liz, will pray for all the things we need (internet, cheap, hot showers and a bed for everyone) and ask God to lead her to where she needs to go to find it. This time the Lord led the search party to a hostel called Barefoot Backpackers Inn. This place was perfect, everyone got a bed and all the other things we needed. The next morning was Sunday. Jesse heard Hill Song worship music coming from the church across the street; none of us noticed it was even there the night before when we arrived. Jesse told Taylor Lindsey about the church and felt in his heart that he was not supposed to go, but that he should stay back and allow Taylor to go alone. Basically, a long story short, Taylor ended up sharing in the front and prophesying over the church, they were so touched and encouraged that they gave him a part of the offering they had that day. Taylor had just run out of money the day before. They were so excited that we were there; they wanted to minister with us, for us to show their young adults how to be intentional with God’s love. This Church has been praying for missionaries and revival for two years since the pastor’s daughter received a heavenly vision when she was 14 and wrote a book about it; that revival was coming to Chile and going to start from here. They also provided us with families to house us while we are here so that we wouldn’t have to pay for food and lodging. It was such an amazing provision from the Lord because even we had run completely out of money and our bank accounts were at zero for the first time since we left on this journey. Oh man, just hearing the testimony from Taylor and of how they honored him, I was humbled and blessed. We worshiped and I couldn’t stop crying. God is so good… being in the center of his will is the most beautiful thing ever.

All the youth came together with us in the church yesterday. We shared testimonies and prayed together. The glory of God fell on us and many could not even get up off the floor when it was time to have lunch. After we had something to eat we divided into small groups and prepared to go out into the city together to minister. Each group prayed that God would give them clues or pictures of where He wanted us to go and who He wanted us to meet. Coming back it was outstanding to hear all the pictures and things that God showed earlier in prayer exactly matched up leading us to the people who He wanted to encounter. Many people on the streets were touched, healed and experienced the fire and love of God come all over them. We encouraged the church that this was not just an activity or something to do once a week with the church, but that it is a lifestyle that we live every day starting when we wake up asking God who He wants us to stop for that day and living yielded to the Holy Spirit.

The couple Jesse and I are staying with are the youth pastors of the church. They are beautiful people; though they cannot have kids of their own because of cancer, they are in the process of adoption. To be in their house, to pray for them, to see them with Zoe is so wonderful (they will be great parents). Yesterday before we went out to shine the light of God’s love in the streets, we had a glorious time of worship and prayer. I was able to pray for them to see the deepest desire of their hearts fulfilled… a child. It is perfect for them to adopt as well, they are overflowing with love. It is a blessing to be here, to meet more of the body of Christ, our Chilean family.

word

This is something my amazing team member Amanda Potter wrote about our traveling family! love it

Glaciers, whales and miracles
Hardly anything more beautiful

White belly dolphins leap to greet
4 dollar llama socks keeping warm our feet

I stepped into a pod of life-breathing lovers
Who lay it down each day bringing joy to their mothers

We´re from England, Russia, South Africa, America, New Zealand, South America and a FULL ON Aussie
We´re a tight-knit travelling family possie

From buses to ferries and many large statues of Mary
We see new sites each day making time to party and pray

Who are we?
Some say gypsies, missionaries or heaven-bound refugees
We are simple, cageless, limitless, royalty

We´re presence driven and radically given
Numb-to-self generals on a mission

We take our orders to go
For in His winds we do flow

Our bed is in His arms
So with change we see no alarm

Trusting Him is the most freeing thing
Heads held high as sons and daughters of the King

We travel as a herd
Ready to bring the good Word

Time and consistancy are irrevelant
For we´re anchored in the omnipotent

A searching crowd not afraid to whisper,¨mystery¨
But yet addicted to knowing Him intimately

Explorers in search of hidden gold
Never settling to just hear the stories of old

This we be.
